Food is No. 1 / Hrana naša nasušna

You know that man, notwithstanding the need for water, which is in all variants under number one, has a great need for food, ie. the kind of fuel that runs our bodies. In normal conditions of life to which we are accustomed, food is available to us at every step, the hyper, super and local markets and various shops. But what to do in times of global apocalypse? How to get to the minerals, vitamins, sugars and proteins that are essential to our body to function properly ???

Thirst is a specific need, unique because the human body without water can function very short, for a few days only. If during this period the body does not supply the water, it will lead to death. But as I said, it all takes a little while. When it comes to food, the situation is different. The human body is designed to store a certain amount of surplus food that in situations where there is a need for it, he can use for their basic functions. These are first of all a certain amount of fat and protein. When the human body is exposed to lack of food, it gently pulls these reserves and so is the food, of course to a certain point. After it consumed deposited fats, the body switches to muscle wastage, which ultimately leads to a fatal outcome.
That is why we, in addition to the aforementioned water, need food for survival. But how to get food when around there is chaos, looting, killings ...?
Assume that you have already fulfilled certain conditions, ie. that your shelter away from civilization is ready and available to have a smaller or larger piece of land for cultivation. In this introduction to be read, and what you think about this issue "colleagues" Preppers from abroad, and about concrete things, ie. about how and where the easiest to grow the domestic culture, i will write in the next few posts.

Below you fully imparting an article entitled "The 10 best garden vegetables for beginner preppes"

U nastavku vam u cjelosti prenosim članak pod naslovom " The 10 best garden vegetables for beginner preppes"

"So you decided to take the next step on your way to self sufficiency and plant a garden. If you have never gardened before, it can be a daunting task – but by starting small and choosing a small number of easy to grow crops, you can have a successful beginner’s garden this year.
The primary reason most beginner gardeners give up is that they took on too much the first time. Gardening is a lot of work and the work grows rapidly with the size of your garden. While that is fine once you know what you are getting into, it can be a real turn off for a beginning gardener.
You need to make your first garden relatively small and stack the odds of success in your favor by planing only a few easy to plant crops. Think about the satisfaction you will have working and harvesting your small starter garden.
As you gain experience, you can expand the size of your garden and the variety of crops you go. This way if some of the crops fail, you will still have many successes to keep you motivated for when the next planting season arrives.
I remember my first garden. I went big – 80 feet by 20 feet (1,600 sqft) and planted approximately 30 crops. It was exciting in the beginning rototilling it all, planting the seeds and seeing them sprout. But then the weeds started and with limited time due to my job, the weeds soon won out and what would have been a bounty turned into a trickle.
And it left me so disgusted, it turned me off of gardening for several years.
When I started gardening again, it was just a few pots of tomatoes and some herbs. That worked well and I built on that success year after year and now am comfortable maintaining a good sized garden with a variety of interesting vegetables.
To help you get started, here is a list of 10 different vegetables that are easy to grow. Don’t feel like you have to try them all at once. Pick just a few of your favorites for your first year garden and build from there.
  1. Basil – while not really a vegetable, it works really well with tomatoes – another item on this list. Really most herbs are easy to grow but I mention this one due to its compliment with tomatoes.
  2. Bush Zucchini – Zucchini is a really easy type of squash to grow. Its biggest problem is that it takes up a lot of space in you garden. But bush zucchini grows more vertically than horizontally, making it an excellent crop for your beginner garden. And because it is so prolific, just a few bushes will keep you well supplied.
  3. Green beans – Green beans are a great crop. They are easy to grow and produce a bountiful harvest. And best of all, they freeze really well so you can store the excess crop for the winter.
  4. Onions – The best way to work with onions is to buy starter onion sets and plant them. They grow real easily and you will have a nice crop of fresh onions in short order. And even on plants that don’t thrive, you can cut off the tops and use the onion greens in salads and soups.
  5. Peppers – There are a huge variety of peppers of all different heat indexes. Grow some bell peppers and a mix of some of the hot varieties for use in cooking or eating raw in salads. And hot peppers are excellent candidates for drying.
  6. Potatoes – These grow really well and produce an abundance of food that can last you all winter if kept in cold storage – like a root cellar or dry, cool basement. The trick to huge potato crops is loose soil so if you dig out deep holes and refill them with lots of hay or other fluffy mulch, you will get a tremendous yield.
  7. Radishes – This is a great plant. From seed to harvest is very quick. Radishes are typically the first crop that you can harvest and you can do many plantings in a season due to their very short growing period.
  8. Salad greens – Greens include spinach, lettuce, arugula, etc. They are easy to grow and you can constantly harvest them during growing season. Just pick off a few leaves and let the rest keep growing. It is  a great way to enjoy super fresh salad all growing season.
  9. Strawberries – Believe it or not, these grow really easily. Just buy young plants in the spring, plant them in a sunny spot and keep them weed free. When they are ripe and eaten right off the plant, they are like nothing you ever tasted before.
  10. Tomatoes – Last but not least, the tomato is a wonderful beginner crop. Buy seedlings at planting time (and some stakes to tie them as they grow) and be ready for a huge harvest of delicious, perfectly ripe tomatoes for immediate eating or for canning.
Like most things, gardening is a skill that you must practice to get good. Don’t let a few setbacks stop your gardening adventure like it did me. I regret all those years I lost from my stupid mistakes in my first gardening attempt."
